A city like Athens hardly needs introduction: it is the city of myths and legends, culture, and the arts. It is also a burgeoning hub of contemporary art, fuelled by a generation of forward-thinking artists, new initiatives and galleries, and year-long exhibitions and events.
While documenta 14 is often cited as a key influence on the vitalisation of the Athens arts scene, local players have been resilient and consistent in cultivating a fertile ground for contemporary art in the city. When Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center opened in 1988, it became the first multi-purpose art space in Athens; Rebecca Camhi gallery followed in 1995. The international art fair Art Athina held its first edition in 1993, Athens Biennale followed in 2007, while EMST established its permanent location in 2015.
Affordable rent and an abundance of spaces have attracted non-profit and artist-run spaces to Athens, notably Haus N, founded in 2018 by German art collectors Gunda and Peter Niemann, and led by artist Amalia Vekri; P.E.T. Projects, established in Kypseli by artist Angelo Pleassas with a particular interest in rethinking exhibition-making; 3 317, founded and managed by three Greek artists; and the experimental Enterprise Projects, which reconsider both curatorial and artistic practices.
Among international galleries, Gagosian opened its outpost in Kolonaki in 2020, and Michael Werner Gallery inaugurated its Athens location with a group exhibition featuring works by artists including Jean Arp, Georg Baselitz, and Issy Wood in May 2024.
Events in Athens
Athens hosts Art Athina and the Athens Biennale, two significant highlights in Greece’s arts calendar. Active since 1993, Art Athina is one of the oldest contemporary art fairs in Europe; the Athens Biennale, established in 2005, is Greece’s premier international art exhibition.
In 2017, Athens co-hosted the fourteenth edition of documenta with Kassel, Germany. The months-long exhibition has been credited with placing Athens on the global art world map, leading to the steady growth of new galleries and exhibitions spaces in the city.
