In Salt (House), an exhibition of new works, the use of charcoal brings to the table a sense of immediacy alongside the layered oil paint surface. The abstract writing or marks that were a passion of Cy Twombly, often begin as letters to an unknown recipient and become unconscious asemic scrawling. The charcoal felt like a cathartic act, a satisfying beauty in its messiness and fragility, its blackboard temporality or graffiti-like nonchalance, and it was joyful. The oil colour holds its centre, its timeless presence. The deeply layered paintings/drawings are intended to give a sense of the psychological together with a sense of playfulness and to convey the connection between introspection, emotional intelligence and art practice.

Writing about Marie Le Lievre’s work, a critic once said: ‘Let the intensely pleasurable experience of looking at these paintings be the only focus’. In the same review he described Le Lievre as having an ‘extraordinary ability to manipulate liquid paint into mesmerising sensual surfaces on canvas’. Underlying those surfaces are references to the ongoing discussion around the connotations and relevance of abstract expressionism.
