OLIVER OSBORNE
b. 1985, United KingdomLondon-based artist Oliver Osborne’s paintings bring together elements of abstraction, figuration and appropriation. Silk-screens of appropriated cartoons, pages from language textbooks, large multi-panelled monochrome canvases, embroidery and precisely executed paintings are all part of his repertoire. By using this broad visual language he attempts to push against the traditional divergence between abstraction and figuration, and understand what potential the act of painting still holds within contemporary art.
Osborne creates artwork that ranges from found images to photorealism. His work often incorporates text and imagery from language learning textbooks. Recent solo exhibitions include The Neck, Giò Marconi Gallery, a self titled exhibition at Galerie Catherine Bastide, Brussels, and Masculina och Feminina (Europa) at Carl Kostyál, Stockholm. In 2012 Osborne participated in Bloomberg New Contemporaries, which took place at the Liverpool Biennial and the ICA in London.
