Press Release

Mauro C. Martinez’s third solo exhibition at the gallery sees the artist take over both floors with an immersive presentation of his multimedia practice spanning large-scale paintings, sculpture and installation. In a continuation of his previous solo exhibition – The Last Man – Martinez will present a deeper observation of the concept of being chronically online. Titled RateMySetup, this exhibition explores the private spaces in which we live out our digital existence, drawing inspiration from subreddit communities such as RateMySetup, Neckbeard Nests and Shitty Battlestations.

While The Last Man introduced the way that online communities can flatten the hierarchical system of our society, creating an environment of equal opportunity for networking and information sharing,RateMySetup visualises how the hierarchical structure can seep into even the most decentralised digital spaces. Through the use of humour and irony – elements that characterise Martinez’s practice – the exhibition notes how even when attempting to break free from such oppressive systems, the online communities fall back into them by upvoting or downvoting content.

About the Artist

Mauro Martinez juxtaposes common pictorial forms from art history with the monotonous streams of online imagery that we, as an increasingly digital society, are so often subjected to. Skillfully utilising metaphor, irony and dark humour, Martinez’s paintings respond to the doctrines of internet culture, at once critiquing and mocking our relationship with contemporary imagery.
