CHANTANA TIPRACHART
b. 1991, ThailandGrowing up in Kalasin, Isaan (Northeastern region), Tiprachart studied in Communication Arts, Advertising and Marketing Communications major, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Burapha University. An artist and filmmaker, her practice began with films for the cinema which expanded to moving image installations. Surrounded by deeply rooted systematic problems prevalent in her region, she works around the vernacular of her life. Not only drawing from said problems but also the blossoming of sub-cultural phenomenons, everyday occurrences and sentiments of how her, her family and their community live. Be it entertainment, disappearing modes of beliefs or conditions of labour, she begins from a humble approach to stories around her lives which expands to address larger geo-political frameworks. Stories of marginalized identities and cultural landscapes are recontextualized with the surreal and the fantastical to shift understanding of past traditions and beliefs through present conditions on the ground, giving new life to common perceptions of issues we have come to know.
Tiprachart’s first feature film Nha Harn (2020), is an honest celebration of contem-porary Morlam culture embraced by the Isaan youth. Bringing to fore how Morlam as a form of cultural storytelling are transformed, reinterpreted and remixed. The film won Best New Director Award from the Bangkok Critics Assembly and was nominated for Best Screenplay at the Kom Chad Luek Awards. Its impact led to a spin-off television series, Nha Harn: The Series (2021). This marks not only her directorial debut but began her interest in contemporary art. Seeing it as a field for deeper engagements not only with her own subjects but as modes of exploring how one could perceive her works beyond the cinematic screen — ways of intersecting with narratives of others. Tiprachart has participated in Bangkok Art Biennale 2020 with the video installation Lai-Torn (2020); GHOST 2565: Live Without Dead Time with Soo-Kwan (2022); Bangkok Experimental Film Festival 2025 with object a (working title) (2025); and most recently Thailand Biennale Phuket 2025 with The Artificial II (2025).
