Born in 1991 and based in Seoul, Sung is among the most noteworthy emerging Korean painters today, gaining increasing attention with his distinctive modes of visual expression.
Sikyung Sung produces abstract paintings that showcase free-spirited brushstrokes and bold contrasts of color. Rather than devising concrete forms, the artist pursues a pure visual language through recurring, aleatory trajectories of the brush, akin to the traces left by a Zamboni on an ice rink (hence the title of his recent works), resulting in an exquisite melding of intersecting patterns on the canvas and expressive mark making arising from momentary intuition.
Sung holds a BFA from Hongik University, Seoul, and an MFA from the Seoul National University of Science and Technology. He has had solo exhibitions at the nonprofit art spaces d/p (Seoul, 2023) and Art Space Heyong/Shift (Seoul, 2019). His work has been included in group exhibitions at Factory2 (Seoul, 2023), BB&M (Seoul, 2023); and DMZ Art Project (Paju/Yeoncheon, 2023), among others.
