Tonico Lemos Auad was born in 1968 in Belém, capital of Pará in the north part of Brazil. Auad now lives and works in London, England.
Auad disregards material value to create lyrical, often transient forms using a wide range of materials, from the ephemeral and everyday to the precious and enduring. Notions of luck, traditional anecdotes, chance, and the supernatural pervade Auad’s work. But beyond playfulness his work resonates with a darker underbelly of existence. For Auad an awareness of death and the brevity of life are always near at hand.
