Rembrandt’s rule-breaking experiments changed printmaking forever. Printmaking returned the favour by liberating Rembrandt’s art.
In the 17th century, printmaking was a mucky science. Using copper plates, acid baths and etching needles, artists worked carefully to make images that could be mechanically reproduced, again and again. Rembrandt was a rebel. By embracing risk and mistakes, Rembrandt rewrote the rules of printmaking forever.
His spirited, sketchy lines and marks unlocked printmaking’s expressive potential like never before. The medium liberated Rembrandt to experiment without limits. Bringing together more than 120 of his works – rarely displayed all at once – Rembrandt: Radical Printmaker will show one of the world’s greatest artists at his most spontaneous and intimate.
Through his extraordinary array of subjects – religious scenes of Christ, tender portraits of his family, ordinary locals – Rembrandt’s radical approach meant his printmaking could rival his painting for lifelike quality and emotional weight. Rendered in black and white, Rembrandt’s art has never felt more energetic or free.
