New York artist and photographer Tyler Mitchell, known for portraits that elevate Black subjects, has joined mega-gallery Gagosian, who will represent Mitchell globally.
The Atlanta-born artist held his first exhibition with Gagosian in London in 2022. Chrysalis featured idyllic photographs of Black men and women at rest in nature. His work proposes ‘a utopian vision of Black beauty, desire, and belonging’, the gallery noted.
Mitchell’s work will be shown by Gagosian at the upcoming Paris Photo (7–10 November 2024) alongside works by American photographer Richard Avedon. His debut solo exhibition with the gallery will take place in New York next spring.
Mitchell came to attention in 2018 when he shot Beyoncé for Vogue‘s September issue, becoming the first Black photographer to shoot an American Vogue cover at the age of 23. One such portrait was acquired by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.
In 2019, Mitchell held his first exhibition at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. I Can Make You Feel Good, which included photography, video works, and installations, later travelled to New York’s International Center of Photography, concluding in the spring of 2020.
This year, Mitchell opened the travelling exhibition Wish This Was Real at C/O Berlin, presenting photographs, videos, and installations from the past decade. The exhibition is next headed to Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, opening on 24 October.
The artist’s photographs and videos inspired by his upbringing in suburban Atlanta are on view at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art as part of Idyllic Space until 1 December 2024. —[O]
