LABYRINTH
In the 21st century, the conveyance of reality and genuine emotions has become increasingly elusive. Our global visual culture has reduced nearly every visual signal to a mere emoji, and it is within this whirlwind of representations that many artists have sought refuge. The current paradigm of communication has become even more improbable, as mass media and a formidable culturalindustrial complex have stripped speaking, writing, painting, and filming of their inherent innocence. With each cultural shift, contemporary art delves further into abstract derivations, leading to an intricate labyrinth of complexity.
Each Modern is delighted to present a group show from our represented artist, transforming the booth into a metaphor for the perplexing nature of contemporary society.
Last November, Hell Gette’s solo was the inaugural exhibition of our new space, turning her artwork into a feminist Daredevil video game with a secret ending revealed in Taipei Dangdai. Wu MeiChi, a finalist for the Discovery Award at the Jimei x Arles Photo Festival, will also present her new multi-media works with her psychedelic images. Hyperrealistic master Hilo Chen and ChineseAmerican artist Zhao Gang, both popular with the younger crowd, showcase their distinct styles on paper, resembling episodes of a captivating drama, leading to a series of intriguing puzzles.Xu Qu, who had a solo exhibition at the Shanghai Long Museum last year, will showcase his representative works in Taipei after a four-year absence. Curator Sun Dongdong commented, “The works illustrate that the labyrinth remains, regardless of the physical wall. It represents the current state of the world, adventure, disorientation, choices, and decisions. The only constant is being in it, the game between being there and the real world.”
