JAC LEIRNER
b. 1961, BrazilSince the 1980s Jac Leirner sculptures, paintings, and installations have questioned the notion of the original and the value of artworks. In her work, quotidian materials, such as bags, business cards, and hardware, are arranged into minimalist patterns intended to change how viewers understand the items’ roles in the world.
Jac Leirner lives and works in São Paulo. In 2019 she was awarded the 25th Wolfgang Hahn Prize from Museum Ludwig. Recent solo shows include: Fruitmarket Gallery, (Edinburgh, 2017); MoCA Shanghai, (Shanghai, 2016); Museo Tamayo, (México City, 2014); and Yale School of Art (New Haven, 2012). She has participated in major international group exhibitions, for instance Sharjah Biennial (United Arab Emirates, 2015), Venice Biennale (1997 and 1990), Documenta (Kassel, 1992), and Bienal de São Paulo (1989 and 1983). Her work is present in the collections of Tate Modern (Londres), MoMA (New York), Guggenheim (New York), MOCA (Los Angeles), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), among others.
