Artist, designer, set designer, writer, poet, and actor, Than Hussein Clark constructs a body of work rooted in theatricality. Drawing from the history of design, fashion, architecture, visual culture, and especially subcultures, the artist assembles a personal repertoire of figures both marginal and iconic, ranging from Jean Cocteau, Jean Genet, Henry James, and Bruce Chatwin to Barbara Hutton, whom he resurrects or reinvents throughout his creations. A variety of crafts and techniques—textile weaving, resin, metalwork—are mobilized to bring these disparate yet interconnected worlds to life. Baroque and eccentric in both style and total approach, Clark weaves fascinating genealogies of stories and objects that deepen our understanding of the role of appearance in identity-making.

For his new exhibition at Crèvecœur, Than Hussein Clark takes inspiration from the famous “Ball of the Century” held in 1951 and orchestrated by Charles de Beistegui at the Palazzo Labia, fragments of which will be reenacted within the gallery.

Born in 1981 in Exeter, New Hampshire (US), Than Hussein Clark lives and works in London. His work has been exhibited extensively, notably at the CRAC Occitanie, Sète (FR), Fonderia Battaglia, Milan (IT), Mumok, Vienna (AT), Boghossian Foundation - Villa Empain, Brussels (BE), Kunstverein in Hamburg(DE), CAC Brétigny (FR), GAK Bremen (DE), Crèvecœur, Paris (FR), Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem (NL) and David Roberts Art Foundation, London (UK), amongst others.

About the Artist

Than Hussein Clark takes on a plethora of roles, as a designer, performer, researcher, scenographer, and artist. Drawing inspiration from interwar period stories and those of mythical yet often neglected figures, he shapes scenes and interiors, exploring themes of authenticity and identity in their expression in architecture, costume, decorative arts, stage arts, and in the ways that they are embodied.

About the Gallery

Crèvecœur was founded in 2009 by Axel Dibie and Alix Dionot-Morani in Paris. Since its creation, the gallery has been supporting French and international artists whose different practices and visual language explore the most forefront topics and relate to the world’s social and political context.
