갤러리조선은 2022년 2월8일부터 3월1일까지 우민정(WOO MinJung)의 두 번째 개인전 《벌》을 개최한다.

마판에 흙을 채워 수많은 서사들을 새기는 우민정 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 ‘시도하는 우리들’에 대해 이야기한다. 반복되고 끊임없이 지속되는 사람들의 행위를 통해 어쩌면 무의미할 수 있지만 내일을 만들기 위한 시도들의 중요성에 대해 이야기한다. 우민정의 작품에 등장하는 도상들인 코끼리, 뱀, 풀, 무지개, 밧줄과 천막 등은 각 인물들이 바라는 바를 의미하며, 그것은 항상 수직적으로 작용하여 언젠가 그 시도를 뛰어넘고자 하는 우리들의 염원이 담겨있다.

제목의 ‘벌’은 움직이고, 소리가 나며, 끊임없이 무언가를 찾아다니는 것들을 대표한다. 언젠가는 무의미한 행동으로 이어질 수 있지만 그와 동시에 본능과 직결된다는 아이러니를 은유적으로 나타내는 소재이기도 하다. 계속되는 시도는 현대인들의 특별하고도 비슷한 삶에 대한 성찰을 제안한다.

이번 전시는 이전과 달리 각 그림에 불설, 문학, 가곡의 구절 등의 서사를 가지고 있다. 하지만 이들은 완벽한 기승전결이 있는 시나리오라기보다는 누구나 한 번쯤 경험했을 법한, 어렴풋이 모두 가지는 그런 시시해 보일 수 있는 서사들이다. 있었다가 어느 순간 이유 없이 없어지기도 하고, 갑자기 솟아난 듯 영웅처럼 생기기도 하고, 부끄럽거나 비열하기도 한, 일상적인 것들이다. 인물들은 목적지를 향해 달리기도 하고, 추락하기도 한다. 거울을 보고 자신에게 빠지기도 하고, 신이 된 듯 사랑하기도 하고, 함정에 빠져 헤어지기도 하고, 자유롭게 수영하기도, 매달려 구걸하기도 하고, 함정에 빠지기도 한다. 일상적이지만 자신에게만큼은 특별한 순간들을 통해, 벌들의 삶을 위로 받길 바란다.

About the Artist

Minjung Woo graduated in 2010 from Seoul National University with degrees in Painting and Industrial Design, and in 2017, she majored in Painting at the same university’s graduate school.
