Frieze Masters (Booth D01)
• Highlights from Georges Braque, Marlow Moss, Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston, Lucian Freud, MaxBeckmann, Francis Picabia, Lucio Fontana, Oskar Schlemmer and more
• Flora Yukhnovich unveils a new painting made in dialogue with a Jan Brueghel the Elder masterpiece, exhibited side-by-side on the booth.
Highlights from the presentation trace key developments in 20th- and 21st-century art, including Georges Braque’s ‘Paysage à L’Estaque (Landscape at L’Estaque)’ (1907), a rare early landscape painting marking the pivotal shift in Braque’s practice from Fauvism towards Cubism, as well as an early avantgarde painting by Bauhaus alumni Oskar Schlemmer titled ‘Mann mit Fisch (Man with Fish)’ (1916- 1918). Works by modern trailblazers Max Beckmann and Francis Picabia appear alongside Marlow Moss’s radical geometric ‘Composition in White, Black and Yellow’ (1953) and Lucian Freud’s ‘Child in Bed’ (1960), a remarkable and tender painting of Freud’s eldest daughter Annie. Also on view is Giorgio Morandi’s intimate ‘Natura morta (Still Life)’ (1963), Lucio Fontana’s striking yellow ‘Concetto spaziale, Attese (Spatial Concept, Expectations)’ (1963), as well as Philip Guston’s compelling late figurative work ‘Untitled (Two Legs)’ (1979) and a late fabric sculpture by Louise Bourgeois (2002). As part of the group presentation at Frieze Masters, Flora Yukhnovich unveils ‘Perfume’ (2026), a new painting created in direct response to Jan Brueghel the Elder’s exquisite early flower painting ‘Still Life of Flowers in a Stoneware Vase’ (ca. 1607–08), with related examples held by The National Gallery, London, and The Art Institute ofChicago. Exhibited side-by-side, the two works bring Yukhnovich’s distinctive exploration of past and present into direct conversation with the Flemish Old Master. ‘I like the idea of turning something that is looked at into something that you can feel,’ says Yukhnovich. ‘For me, painting is all about that relationship – looking at something, trying to feel it in my hands and in my body, and transferring that energy into the brushwork. Working on a large scale is a way of literally stepping into that feeling. To blow it up. To put my whole body behind the brush.’
