Press Release

Luxembourg + Co., London, announces the opening of Mira Schendel: In Transit, an exhibition held across Frieze Masters art fair (14 - 18 October) and the gallery’s space on 2 Savile Row (12 October - 12 December).

Born Myrrha Dagmar Dub in 1919 in Zurich, Schendel was brought up in Italy until the age of twenty when she escaped to Yugoslavia at the start of the war before migrating to Brazil in 1949 where she would find her mature artistic voice. Schendel’s artistic methods range across painting, sculpture, drawing and monotype printing, depicting loosely arranged letters and words, as well as enigmatic line compositions and delineated fields of colour in different textures and media. These means of expression served Schendel in an attempt to cross over the limits of language as we know it – a restrictive and disciplined frame. By transforming surface and symbol into sites of bodily experience Schendel’s art offers to open-up language and allow “the unutterable to enter it toward the totally different”.

Luxembourg + Co.’s presentation at Frieze is organised in collaboration with the artist’s estate and marks the publication of a new book that explores the artist’s original use of materials as means to define drawing and painting in spatial and sculptural terms.

About the Artist

Mira Schendel, baptized as Myrrha Dagmar Dub, was born in Zurich at a time of mounting antisemitism in Western Europe. The only daughter of Karl Leo Dub, from a Jewish Czech family, and Ada Saveria, whose father was German and mother Italian, Mira Schendel grows up in Italy after her mother’s marriage to Count Tomaso Gnoli, then the director of Biblioteca Estense Universitaria, in Modena.

About the Gallery
For over a decade, Gomide&Co has been present on the national and international art circuit, contributing to the production and insertion of primary and secondary market artists in public and private collections. In its program, while seeking to present works by renowned names in modern and contemporary art, the gallery also works to achieve other perspectives. In the midst these movements of distancing and approximation on diverse artistic productions, dialogues are created, enabling new conceptualisations and narratives.

Interweaving different generations and approaches, Gomide&Co represents both established artists and recent artists who are consolidating their institutional and commercial careers. Among them are Lenora de Barros, Marcelo Cipis, Maria Lira Marques, Tiago Mestre, Francisco Brennand, and León Ferrari. In the secondary market, artists such as Joseph Beuys, Martin Kippenberger, Mira Schendel, Antoni Tàpies, Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato, and Marcel Broodthaers have been shown in anthological exhibitions, reflecting the gallery’s curatorial concern for bringing together historic and fundamental works for the understanding and appreciation of their practices.

From the beginning, Gomide&Co believes in the collaboration with galleries and institutions. In these exchanges, the gallery’s presence has expanded to new places, in addition to its participation in major art fairs and biennials. At the new address on Avenida Paulista, opened in 2023, Gomide&Co continues its commitment to fostering the art scene through dialogue and plurality.
