SETAREH is pleased to present the third solo show by Berlin-based artist Maki Na Kamura.
Figuration and abstraction fuse in Maki Na Kamura's contemporary paintings. Known and recognized for her idiosyncratic style, Maki Na Kamura has been included in publications such as Vitamin P2 - New Perspectives in Painting (Phaidon, London 2011) and Landscape Paintings Now (Thames & Hudson, 2019).
The new series of paintings diverge from the geographic feeling shifting towards a place in the memory, constantly in motion yet ever recognisable. The point of view seems to betray the natural perspective, immersing the viewer into the surroundings that never cease to evolve. This plasma-like fluidity enables the interweaving of the colour fields, abandoning sharp borders and conjuring abstract colour fields. Nevertheless, stillness is nowhere to be found and nor is abstraction. Maki Na Kamura's paintings draw from the canon of painting and evoke the time-space continuum.
The artist combines ensembles of figures with the monumental panorama. Putting focus on a more detailed view that evokes society itself. Human beings are a social species and the scenery allows the viewer to breathe, enjoying the burst of colour and the sense of belonging. A mastery through technical application mesmerizes the eye caught in it, with flowing vibrating shades that defamiliarize the original tones. The thorough harmony is emanated in different levels: the space continuity reminding of the natural world, the shared companionship and the hypnotizing colour palette.
Maki Na Kamura conquers a new dimension in contemporary painting, intertwining two realms, representation and abstraction, positioning her in the relevant peer group of contemporary artists. SETAREH is beyond excited to present the incomparable composition style, never before explored by the artist and presented for the first time to the public.
