Stevenson has galleries in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and an office in Amsterdam. We love publishing books, and for this Art Basel presentation we turned to two of our favourite gallery publications for inspiration: 9 Weeks, a collection of interviews with artists published in2016, and its companion, 9 More Weeks, published two years later.
Once we had identified the concept, we set out to identify the nine works. There were some clear parameters. The editing had to be rigorous, because the title did not allow us to expand the selection by a work or two, as one might for a traditional art fair. We also had to be conscious that this presentation would be seen on screens only, and had to consider the flattening effect of this on surface as well as the loss of scale.
Perhaps inevitably, common threads emerged. Most of the artists are women. They reflect our gallery's geography: five live in South Africa, one in Zimbabwe, one in Sudan, and two in the Netherlands. All work in a figurative idiom, though not exclusively. Each of the works benefits from real-life viewing, yet remains compelling on a screen. Ultimately these are nine very singular works of art. We are honoured to share them with you here.
