Alberto Garutti was born in Galbiate (LC), Italy in 1948 and lives and works in Milan. His practice focuses on opening a dialogue between the work, the space and the public. Claiming that ‘The method is the work’ Alberto Garutti researches the art of the meeting place that groups together and weaves reflections on artistic practice, on the roles of the artist and that of the visitor who views his work, seen as an essential element that gives the work a meaning.
His works are complex systems that investigate the relationship between the natural and the artificial, between art and nature, which, in the artist’s belief, are an inseparable pair, as «art contains the mystical sense of nature». Alberto Garutti has also executed permanent public works that deal with bringing about relationships and links between public and private institutions and the city’s social fabric.
Garutti has exhibited widely in Europe and the United States, he has shown at the 1990 Venice Biennale, the 2001 Istanbul Biennial and the Memory Marathon held at Serpentine Gallery of London in 2012, and was commissioned to create public works for various cities and museums including the S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent, Belgium, the 21st Century Museum of Modern Art in Kanazawa, Japan, MARTa Museum in Herford, and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
