Soohyeok Shin received his Doctorate of Fine Arts in 2008 and MFA (2005) from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He received his MFA and BFA from Hongik University Art College. The artist has participated in group exhibitions such as the 3rd Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, Inter Image in Brisbane and Korean Young Artist Biennale in Daegu. He is a recipient of the Joongang Fine Arts Prize.
In describing Shin’s work, the critic Park Soonyoung states, ‘We live by memory. Without recollection, whether voluntary or not, habitual or image-like, there is no life. And presumably, without expression, there would be no memorization. In the sense, the work of art is nothing but the memory itself. This is all the more true when it comes to personal emotions, because, as the artist said, it is only through individuals that the meaningful world reveals itself. This is why particular attention is drawn to Shin’s work … his transplanting of his memories of space to another new space.’
