Sphephelo Mnguni Biography

Born in Durban, South Africa, Sphephelo Mnguni graduated with a BA in Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology in 2016. Mnguni’s practice delves into the nexus of Blackness, culture, and modernity. Employing painting as his primary medium, Mnguni’s Black portraiture highlights narratives of Black life, deliberately reflecting culture, contemporary discourse, and celebrating the diverse dimensions of Blackness. Currently, he lives and works in Durban, South Africa.

Mnguni’s work explores an emerging African modernity underpinned by an urban Black experience and visual culture. He showcases an interplay of art between South Africa and the world, illustrating how integral Black cultures are to the development and understanding of our modern world.

The power of Mnguni’s portraiture lies in his ability to subvert colonialist artistic grammar, repurposing it to celebrate a new African cultural subject-hood and find pride in narratives of subjective Blackness. Inspired by intersections of selfhood, Mnguni’s work reflects an oscillation in a state of permanent hybridity, a movement between cultures, places, and identities. Through his artistic and aesthetic approach, the artist’s work is balanced visually between the dichotomy of Blackness as an expansive unknowable monolith and an intense generator of culture.
