Tay Bak Chiang graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1995 and later studied at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou in 1997. Chiang uses Chinese ink and pigments on rice paper to create abstract blocks of colour inspired by nature. He often interprets aspects of nature found in Southeast Asia, such as heliconas, banana and palm trees, stones, and lotus ponds. He uses minimalist forms, reducing a lotus flowers to their absolute essential elements. He hopes to invite viewers to imagine and discover nature for themselves. For Chiang, nature represents perfect balance and harmony. He believes that his art should reflect the spirit of contemporary times as well as bear the imprint of his environment.
