Press Release

The Brett Whiteley Studio, administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, awards an annual travelling art scholarship to artists aged between 20 and 30 with an established body of work.

This year, artist Jelena Telecki will judge the entries and curate an exhibition of paintings selected from the works submitted by finalists in the scholarship.

The winners will be announced on 23 October 2024. One artist will receive a three-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and $50,000. Five artists will each receive $10,000 and a two-week residency at the Shark Island Institute in Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales. The annual scholarship was created from an endowment by Beryl Whiteley, who died in 2010.

About the Artist

Jelena Telecki’s paintings often depict people tripping, slipping, doing something pointless or simply just giving up. Painted in dark sombre tones, her subjects are frozen in their moment of thought and sometimes horror. Although Telecki’s paintings define an uncomfortable moment, there is a sense that perhaps something better might happen in the next moment to justify their feeling of inadequacy. Telecki explains: “It is difficult to define failure for various reasons as failure in one system may not be failure in another. Similarly in my work, the depiction of foolishness or pointlessness may not be all that it seems to be”.
