Press Release

Lawrence Weiner’s radical embrace of language as a sculptural medium played a fundamental role in the emergence of Conceptual art. This installation brings a key work, 5 Figures of Structure (1987), back to the galleries at Dia Beacon, marking the first presentation of the artist’s work at Dia since his passing in 2021. The exhibition examines relationships between word and image, instruction and installation, and demonstrates his belief that ‘the subject matter of [his] art is - art.’

About the Artist

Contemporary American artist Lawrence Weiner is recognised as a pioneering figure of Conceptual art. Using language as a primary material, Weiner challenged the conventional notion of the artwork as a visible and tangible object. He also aimed to disrupt the authority of the artist by claiming that the realisation of an artwork lies with the viewer.
