For the 2026 edition of MiArt, Dep Art Gallery presents a project that brings into dialogue four key figures in figurative art from the late 20th century to the early 21st century: the Italians Salvo and Valerio Adami, and the Americans Tom Wesselmann and Alex Katz.
Emerging from different cultural contexts and geographically distant backgrounds, these four artists share a common urgency: to restore centrality to the figure and visual narrative in an era dominated by abstraction and conceptualism.
The exhibition aims to highlight the cross-cutting connections between these artists, such as the use of line as a structuring element, the reduction of color to solid color fields and the transformation of objects, landscapes, and faces into timeless icons. Two generations, two continents, one shared return to painting as a foundational act.
Wesselmann monumentalizes domestic life and the female body with flat colors and advertising-inspired cropping; Katz freezes the moment in portraits and landscapes with low pictorial definition but extremely high iconic intensity; Adami constructs narratives through signs and bold color fields, where the black line both a classical and comic legacy organizes space; Salvo returns to painting from a conceptual threshold, reinventing cityscapes and nocturnes, allegories and self-representations as “absolute” images beyond time.
Salvo, Adami, Wesselmann, and Katz remind us that painting remains a space where memory and the present, the individual and the universal, meet on the canvas surface. MiArt becomes the occasion to bring back into critical debate a language that, far from being exhausted, continues to speak powerfully to new generations.
