Press Release

All pictures in Crimson are painted with a single pigment, an alizarin crimson. And as in earlier paintings with phthalo green, the background plays an important role. It is carefully prepared. It serves to ‘open’ the pigment, to prepare its richness of nuances for the painterly plan, to make it visible and to use it. A neon yellow primer was used here, the traces of which are clearly visible at the edges of the painting.

The colour spectrum of alizarin crimson ranges from a heavy dark brown to a fiery red. It combines with the yellow of the background to form, among other things, an orange-red, which is the complementary colour to phthalo green.

Daniel Lergon, born 1978 in Bonn, completed his studies from 2000—2006 in the class of Prof. Lothar Baumgarten at the Berlin University of the Arts. Most recently, his works were shown at the Mediations Biennale, Poznan (2018), the Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art, Aalborg (2017) and the Kaviarfactory, Henningsvaer, Norway (2017).

From 10 till 14 April we will again exhibit at Art Cologne and would be delighted to welcome you at our booth C26, hall 11.2. The next exhibition will open in the beginning of September.

About the Artist

The works of Daniel Lergon are characterised by a deep interest in natural scientific phenomena, which he transforms into aesthetic artworks out of unusual materials. This leads forth individual kind of paintings, which unlock their visual potential in the correlative interplay between light and surface, and the optical effects and perceptions that result from this
