BB&M is pleased to present The Real Real, a solo exhibition of Dahoon Nam, on view from October 31 to December 12. Marking the artist’s debut presentation with the gallery, the exhibition employs “imperfect replication” as a critical strategy to interrogate the authority of canonical modern and contemporary art and the value systems that uphold it. In Nam’s practice, replication is not merely derivative; it is the means by which the construction, validation, and preservation of artistic value are shown to be contingent. In an age when images are infinitely reproducible, The Real Real explores how our sense of the “real” is shaped by the shifting dynamics between institutions, capital, and the market.
Dahoon Nam (b. 1995) examines how value is produced and circulated within contemporary art and visual culture through strategies of repetition, reenactment, and reconstruction. Reworking art-historical motifs and consumer imagery long invested with cultural authority, he introduces subtle distortions that question how authenticity, artistic legitimacy, and value are established. For Nam, reconstruction functions not as an act of imitation but as a means of testing the aesthetic assumptions and hierarchies inherited from Western art history.
