An exhibition of paintings by John Joseph Mitchell and sculptures by Joel Tomlin.

Bringing together the work of John Joseph Mitchell and Joel Tomlin, this exhibition explores two distinct yet quietly resonant approaches to making, where attention and material sensitivity shape intimate worlds of encounter.

Working from his home near the Tuckahoe River in New Jersey, Mitchell paints small-scale scenes that dwell on fleeting, often overlooked moments: a shifting light, a passing bird, the stillness of a room. Each work, carefully prepared and handmade from panel to frame, carries a sense of devotion to process. His paintings unfold as visual vignettes, poetic fragments that elevate the everyday.

Tomlin’s sculptures emerge from a deeply tactile, hand-worked practice rooted in his London studio. Using found wood, tin, and cast elements, his objects are shaped gradually through acts of carving and assembling. Arranged in shifting groupings, they suggest relationships and personalities, hovering between the familiar and the unknowable. At once playful and contemplative, Tomlin’s works are imbued with a quiet, talismanic presence.

Across painting and sculpture, both artists share a commitment to slowness and to the transformative potential of modest materials and moments. Whether through Mitchell’s painted glimpses of lived experience or Tomlin’s carefully “nibbled” forms, the exhibition will offer a meditation on intimacy, observation, and the enduring resonance of the handmade.
