Press Release

Following the presentation of Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild (1988) at Art Basel Paris, Lévy Gorvy Dayan is delighted to spotlight Andy Warhol’s Muhammad Ali (1977) at Art Basel Miami Beach (Booth G8), on view from Wednesday, December 3 to Sunday, December 7.

Bringing together two all-time greats—Andy Warhol and Muhammad Ali—the presentation of the portrait at the Miami Beach Convention Center marks a return for its late subject, who captured the heavyweight title for the first time in a shocking upset of Sonny Liston on February 25, 1964, at the then named Miami Beach Convention Hall.

Here, Warhol’s striking representation of the renowned boxer depicts Ali gazing directly at the viewer, his fists raised. The painting features vibrant tones of blue and yellow against a rich purple ground and reveals Warhol’s gestural brushstrokes and the dynamic application of paint with his fingers in this iconic likeness.
