Press Release

Located in Pirlangimpi (Garden Point) on Melville Island, Munupi Arts & Crafts Association was established in 1990 as a place for artists to continue and celebrate Tiwi cultural knowledge through both traditional and contemporary mediums. Since its founding, the art centre has supported a diverse range of practices including painting, pottery, carving, weaving and printmaking, while remaining deeply connected to Tiwi ceremonial and artistic traditions.

Working predominantly with natural ochres, Tiwi artists draw from ceremony, dance, storytelling and everyday life on the islands. Intricate ceremonial designs known as Jilamara, traditionally painted onto the body during yoi (dance) and ceremony, continue to form the foundation of contemporary Tiwi painting through rhythmic patterning and repeated mark-making.

Life on the Tiwi Islands remains closely connected to Country, seasonal cycles and community. Families travel across the landscape to fish, hunt and gather food from the beaches, mangroves and rivers, while ceremony, football, storytelling and collective gatherings continue to shape everyday life. These experiences, rhythms and inherited cultural traditions remain deeply embedded within the works presented throughout this exhibition.
