Press Release

Cheng’s solo exhibition will present a new simulation, alongside screenings of Life After BOB: The Chalice Study (2021). Extending the world of Life After BOB, the new work portrays the daily routine of Chalice’s pet turtle, dramatising every step in the turtle’s AI-driven cognitive model to reconcile its inner needs with the affordances and threats of its external world.

About the Artist

Ian Cheng’s work explores the nature of mutation and the capacity of humans to relate to change. Drawing on principles of video game design, improvisation, and cognitive science, Cheng has developed ‘live simulations’, living virtual ecosystems that begin with basic programmed properties, but are left to self-evolve without authorial intent or end.
