PKM Gallery is pleased to present a solo project by Korean sculptor Chung Hyun (b. 1956) at the Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 Survey sector. The Survey sector exclusively features artworks created before the year 2000. PKM’s booth will feature Chung Hyun’s powerful bronze head and tar drawings from the 1990s with concentrated precision. These works, which present the fundamental aesthetics of sculptural materiality through the harmony of metal’s rigidity and organic forms, possess a fresh resonance particularly significant in today’s over-dematerialised art landscape. Chung Hyun conveys a profound reflection on human existence through the inherent materiality of his materials and his intuitive expressive power, delivering a weighty poetic reverberation grounded in time and history.

His works have established an unparalleled position in Korean sculpture. They transcend simple sculptural beauty, representing artistic explorations that capture deep narratives of matter, time, and memory.

Notably, Chung Hyun has been selected as one of the Art Basel Editors’ pick artists, with his artwork images and editor reviews will be featured on the Art Basel website from December 2nd throughout the fair. This project promises to be a significant stage for the artist to unfold his artistic vision to the world.

Chung Hyun has held numerous solo exhibitions and group exhibitions at major art institutions, including those at the National Museum of Modern Art (Gwacheon, Korea), Nam-Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Kumho Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Kim Chong Yung Museum (Seoul, Korea), Jardin du Palais Royal (Paris, France), and Today Art Museum (Beijing, China). He has received several awards, including the Kim Sechoong Sculpture Award from the Kim Sechoong Memorial Association (2014), the AICA Korea Award from the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art Korea (2009), Artist of the Year 2006 from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2006), and Artist Today 2004 from the Kim Chong Yung Museum (2004).
