Press Release

PKM Gallery is pleased to present Floating I, a solo exhibition by Young Do Jeong (b. 1985), on view from November 13 to December 30, 2026. Marking the artist’s return in five years, following Bury Me in 2021 at PKM Gallery, the exhibition features an entirely new body of work, including a monumental-scale painting that covers the gallery’s largest wall like a mural, vividly animated shaped panels that appear to emerge from the paintings, and drawings.

Through a process of responding to, erasing, overpainting, and revisiting images on the canvas, Jeong creates new forms and relationships. His longstanding inquiries into individuality, belonging, desire, and human relationships expand in this exhibition into an exploration of the fluidity of the self and the image. The exhibition’s title, Floating I, plays on the interplay of sound and meaning in “I” and “eye,” evoking both the self and the act of looking, while also alluding to the Korean word for “child.”. Together, these meanings evoke a self that drifts and transforms in response to relationships and the currents of experience, at times freely and at others in states of conflict. Rooted in the artist’s personal experiences, this perspective extends beyond an individual narrative to reflect the condition of all of us, constantly changing through our relationships with others. Rather than privileging predetermined outcomes, the exhibition foregrounds the process through which images emerge and evolve, illuminating Jeong’s painterly experiments and artistic practice as they traverse the boundaries of fixed meanings and forms.

Jeong studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He has held solo exhibitions in major cities in Korea and abroad, including New York, Philadelphia, and Braga, and participated in numerous group exhibitions, including exhibitions at the Daejeon Museum of Art in 2021. His works are held in the collections of K11 Art Foundation, the Brookhaven College Collection, and the Government Art Bank of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, among others.

About the Artist

Jeong received his BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from Temple University Tyler School of Art. Jeong’s first solo exhibition in Korea presents his recent works including paintings and drawings. The artist focuses on different stereotypes, moral standards and principles of the cultures of Korea and United States. As an artist who aspires to establish meaningful and profound communication between individuals, he captures one’s thoughts and experiences of life’s sufferings, losses, misunderstandings and sins in a frank yet metaphorical way. In particular, the animal forms which frequently appear in his work remind the viewer of the unrefined state of human nature, while playing upon the cultural specificities which evoke different interpretations of the same subject. The tension throughout the application of various materials creates intense pictorial narratives in multilayered forms that cross over the boundaries of abstract and figurative.

With previous locations in Hwa-dong and Cheongdam-dong, the gallery moved to its current space in Samcheong-dong—an artistic and cultural hub in the heart of Seoul—in 2015.
