Sundaram Tagore Gallery was founded in 2000 by the eponymous Calcutta-born gallerist—formerly a director at New York’s Pace Wildenstein Gallery and also an established art historian and filmmaker—with the mission to further cross-cultural exchange in a world that is interconnected now more than ever. With four spaces—in Singapore, Hong Kong, and in two locations in New York—the gallery hosts quality exhibitions and not-for-profit events that encourage conversations across the arts.
Read MoreSundaram Tagore Gallery represents a range of international artists whose works concern diverse media, cultures, and time periods. Among these are Lalla Essaydi, a Morrocan artist known for her large-scale photographs that re-examine representations of the Arab world in historical and contemporary times; Hiroshi Senju, a Japanese artist recognised for his exquisite waterfall paintings that combine elements of Japanese traditional landscapes and international modernist abstraction; Miya Ando, an American artist whose metal canvases and sculptures engage with our perceptions of colour and the medium of painting; and Karen Knorr, a German-born American photographer and activist whose multi-layered works range from a study of the British class system to an exploration of cultural heritage in India.
Between 2017 and 2019, Sundaram Tagore Gallery participated in international art fairs including Art Basel in Hong Kong, Art Miami, EXPO Chicago, Masterpiece London Art Fair, and Sydney Contemporary.
True to its mission, Sundaram Tagore Gallery is also known for hosting exhibitions that engage with the ideas of intercultural exchange and contemporary art from non-Western cultures. In 2019, Women’s Work at Sundaram Tagore Singapore highlighted works by five female artists from Asia and the Middle East; Heads or Tails? Uncertainties and Tensions in Contemporary Thailand, curated by Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani in 2017, brought the works of six influential Thai artists to the gallery’s Chelsea and Madison Avenue branches; and The World We Live In—jointly organised with Collective 88 and Ayala Museum, Manila, in 2016—was an exhibition devoted to contemporary photography. In 2015, Tagore and Marius Kwint co-curated Frontiers Reimagined—an exhibition featuring 44 artists whose works traverse cultural boundaries—at the Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Venice as a Collateral Event of the 56th Venice Biennale.
