Eggert was born in Croatia where her family lived on a farm. She emigrated to Australia with her parents when she was 10.
After high school she went to Sydney University and studied history and, in 1988, after her youngest child was in kindergarten, Eggert enrolled in art school. “I always used to talk about going and finally I did. It was a big decision for me.” It was here she learnt to refine her skills and develop her own style.
Just as important is the space inside the dress and the way in which Eggert creates the illusion of a body by manipulating the mesh.
Though Eggert approaches the sculpture as if it were a “conventional study of someone”, her dresses stand empty, no figure fills out contours but, thanks to her skills, the illusion of flesh is there.
