“In Europe I learned to consider things from many perspectives, not only from one angle, such as ideology, politics etc., but with a broader horizon. This is the same with the definition of your identity. One cannot define it from one angle. My works deal with the question of human nature. This is also a global question. I do not deal with this question under the aspect of different cultures but rather from an abstract angle. Human nature is the same everywhere, only the outer appearance is different.” -Du Zhenjun.
Du Zhenjun (b. 1961) began his career in Shanghai as a traditional painter. While teaching painting, he was introduced to Western art practices and began to shift toward multimedia works upon moving to France. Du now practices almost completely in digital media, which he believes most relevant to a contemporary context. In his works, Du considers the tragedy of the human condition as it sits within a social structure dictated by digital media.
Du currently lives in both Paris and Shanghai.
