João Queiroz Biography

João Queiroz, born in Lisbon in 1957, began exhibiting his paintings in the early 1980s while studying philosophy at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lisbon. These two interests converge in his work, as he devotes himself to an informed reflection on the role of the image in the contemporary era.

João Queiroz paints landscapes. He doesn’t paint from life. Oil, watercolour, and encaustic are his favourite mediums. Eliminating all traces of figuration, his landscapes border on abstraction. And, upon observing them, the viewer quickly senses the need for a dual interpretation of these landscapes, because here the painter seeks to encourage the viewer to deconstruct their usual way of perceiving a work.

For João Queiroz, landscape is more a field of possibilities than a goal in his work; it allows him to formulate a vast and extremely rich proposition, endowed with an extraordinary range of elements and events that are offered to him. His works are not accounts of a landscape, nor topographies. They represent an investigation into the possibility of a sensory and non-descriptive representation of nature.

The work of João Queiroz is represented in numerous private et public collections in Portugal.
