Pranay Dutta Biography

Pranay Dutta’s (b.1993, Kolkata, India. Lives and works in Kolkata) practice incorporates painting, video, computer-generated imagery, and drawings to examine the complex relationship between terrestrial species and landscapes. In haunting images, devoid of human life and bleached of colour, Dutta strives to reveal or accentuate the forces that mould landscapes. His apocalyptic scenes point to these visible and invisible phenomena — geological or climatic events, colonisation, the extraction of resources — that deplete ecologies and threaten future renewal. In their rawness, the works expose the tension between our exploitative processes and the rhetoric of environment stewardship and care.

Dutta received his BVA in painting from MS University, Baroda in 2016 and a MVA in painting from MS University, Baroda in 2019.

His work has been exhibited internationally at White Cube Bermondsey, London (2025); Malmö Konstmuseum, Sweden (2025); Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Madrid (2023); Kochi Muziris Biennale (2022); Fondazione Elpis, Milan (2022); Goethe-Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi (2020); Space Studio, Vadodara (2020); Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa (2019); Indigo+Madder, London (2018); Khoj, New Delhi (2018).

Dutta was a recipient of the FICA Emerging Artist award(Extended Support Platform with Mrinalini Mukherjee Foundation) (2020) and the Inlaks Fine Art Award (2019).
