Those who have followed Pupuk’s artistic career love his paintings for their light-hearted depictions of the people of his hometown of Yogyakarta, and its lesser-known corners. They are delightful insights into his townsfolks’ intimate lives. It could be a tender moment between a mother in fond embrace of her firstborn baby or the mystique of the picturesque Borobudur. Pupuk’s paintings often focus on family ties and the joys derived from it. His art portrays an artist who appreciates kindness and the simple pleasures of life.
Inner Essence featured Pupk’s latest works after recent success at the auction houses. Pupuk continues with his signature medium in oil and watercolour. His palette ranges from umber to scarlet. They may be dark but are never subdued. These strong colours combine with Pupuk’s impasto strokes and whimsically sensuous lines to celebrate the vivacity in people’s lives. His paintings are a tribute to innocence and simplicity.
Pupuk DP was born in Yogyakarta in 16 July 1964 and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art and Design at the Indonesia Institute of Arts in 1994. Pupuk has already exhibited extensively in various parts of Indonesia, including Jakarta and Yogyakarta. . He was also selected as a finalist in the Philip Morris Art Competition 1997.
His distinctive style won the art audience over and most of his works were sold out during the month-long exhibition. Several of his works are also in the collection of the Singapore Art Museum.
