These are not the happy scenery (moment) of birthday, which is generally reminiscent. Birthdays, according to Chang, are often associated with the adjective ‘happy’, at times constraining and even subordinating people’s thoughts to emphasise happiness. The artist recalled a bad memory of having a sad birthday, and when she thinks of related words such as surprise parties and unexpected gifts, she faces a sensitive self that is different from other days.
