Yan Lei(b.1965) is among the first generation of Chinese conceptual artist who works across diverse mediums including painting, photography, video, performance, and installation. Through the usage of different materials, Lei addresses the constantly shifting grounds of social, political, and economic variables under the condition of globalization. He focuses on defining the dynamics between the local and global, the center and periphery, and the powerful and the disempowered. Yan Lei has participated in a number of international shows including Documenta, Venice Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Istanbul Biennale, and Shanghai Biennale. He has held solo exhibitions at venues including the Hong Kong Art Centre (Hong Kong, China) and Aspen Art Museum (Aspen, USA). In 2002, Lei was awarded the Best Artist by the Chinese Contemporary Art Awards (C.C.A.A.). His works have been collected widely by museums and private institutions including the Pompidou Centre (Paris, France), Stanford University art Center, M+ Museum (Hong Kong, China), and Red Mansion Foundation (London, UK).
