Press Release

The first dual-artist commission created specifically for the M+ Facade, Ink | Pulse is a live generative work that is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between acclaimed Taiwanese calligraphy artist Tong Yang-Tze and Hong Kong media artist Chris Cheung (h0nh1m). The algorithm-driven commission is inspired by and based on Tong Yang-Tze’s Silent Music series, which are 100 ink-based pieces collected during Tong’s creative process over the years. Renditions of Tong’s masterful strokes, dots, and markings are animated into pulsating apparitions and movements, as though sight-reading the artist’s soundless graphical score.

Composed of ink traces left by Tong between 2003 and 2010 while writing her running and cursive scripts, the Silent Music series illustrates the energy, poise, and flow of Tong’s calligraphy, with each piece demonstrating the weight of the brush, the rhythm of her lines, and the latency of in-between spaces. In Ink | Pulse, Cheung’s generative art responds to ink’s ability to evolve in portraying Tong’s ink strokes as the heart-like vessel for cell division, blood circulation, and the nervous system. It amplifies the conceptual and rhythmic resonance between the enduring quality of ink practice and the ever-renewing nature of life.

A collaboration that emerged from passionate conversations around calligraphy, Ink | Pulse pays tribute to the lively dialogue between generations, artistic practices, and mediums, offering an ever-changing view of ink as a form of energy, philosophy, and spiritual universe.
