At 94, Alex Katz shows no sign of slowing, having painted seven new monumental landscape paintings for his remarkable solo exhibition at Gladstone Gallery.

Filled corner to corner with his characteristic monochromatic palette, his canvases are a sounding board for his crisply articulated technique, where broad strokes and blurred light give the sense of a fleeting moment in time.

‘Realist painting has to do with leaving out a lot of detail. I think my painting can be a little shocking in all that it leaves out. But what happens is that the mind fills in what’s missing... painting is a way of making you see what I saw’—Alex Katz
