‘Inserting props such as cigarettes or bottles of alcohol...or using strong colour to tweak the slant of eyes or mouth can further transform the figures from objectified to quietly self-possessed, matter-of-fact or provocative subjects’.

This intoxicating new painting by South African-born Lisa Brice is included in her solo show at LGDR’s 89th Street location in New York.

It is among three new exhibitions that have opened across the gallery consortium’s Paris and Hong Kong spaces, by Carol Rama and Pierre Soulages respectively.

In November, her 2017 work No Bare Back, after Embah was the opening lot at Sotheby’s ‘The Now’ sale, hammering for $3.1M, an auction record for the artist.
