Last week, Nan Goldin was awarded the prestigious Käthe Kollwitz Prize for her contribution to contemporary photography.
Since the 1970s, Goldin’s intimate and poignant portrayals have captured LGBT subcultures in New York City, laying bare the oppression faced by these communities as well as the AIDS and opioid epidemics that erupted through the 1970s and 80s.
As an activist, Goldin founded PAIN (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now) in 2017 to denounce the Sackler family’s distribution of the highly addictive opioid Oxycontin through their pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma LP.
On Saturday, an exhibition tracing the artist’s activist and photographic work opened at Museo Tamayo in Mexico City.
