Exhibitions by Remy Jungerman and Ghada Amer have opened at Goodman Gallery in London.
Following major institutional presentations of Remy Jungerman’s work internationally, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and co-representation of the Netherlands at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, this is the artist’s first U.K. solo presentation.
Jungerman’s geometric works revisit Modernist visual languages while drawing from Maroon culture in the use of certain materials. Born in Suriname, which was a Dutch colony between the 17th and 20th centuries, Jungerman is a descendent of the Suriname Maroons on his mother’s side.
Also on view in the gallery are Ghada Amer’s subversions of identity’s social frameworks, with works including the artist’s thread and canvas paintings, sculptures, and a garden installation.
Her embroidered canvases contain phrases from texts on women’s rights by a variety of male and female authors, including Egyptian feminist Nawal El Saadawi and former Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein.
Both exhibitions are on view until 28 May 2022.
