Sarah Lucas’ first major solo exhibition in Asia at Beijing‘s Red Brick Art Museum (2 November 2019–16 February 2020) features sculptures, installations, and photographs created over the past three decades.
In this Ocula video, Yan Shijie, founder and director of Red Brick Art Museum, reflects on what it means to introduce Lucas’ feminist practice to a Chinese audience, discussing performances specially devised for this show, including One Thousand Eggs: For Women (2019) for which Lucas invited the audience to throw eggs against a wall on the exhibition’s opening day. Key works on view include the self-portrait, Eating a Banana (2014), which pictures the artist in a leather jacket eating a banana as she stars at the camera lens, and Lucas’ iconic assemblage, Au Naturel (1994), in which a bucket and two melons, suggesting the female form, rest beside a cucumber flanked by two oranges atop a beat-up mattress bent against the wall. The artist is also showing two ongoing sculptural series, ‘Bunny’ and ‘NUDs’, with a Chinese edition of ‘NUDs’ conceived for her Beijing show. —[O]
