The fourth edition of Frieze Los Angeles 2023 opened with huge success last week.
Gladstone Gallery pulled out all the stops with their unfettered presentation of knockout works—a red-tinged Jill Mulleady oil painting, a Keith Haring ink series, and a light sculpture by the legendary Philippe Parreno. Among the Brussels-based gallery's top sales was Untitled (cowboy) (1998) by Richard Prince, which sold for $3 million.
While David Kordansky Gallery was host to a compendium of Chase Hall's latest coffee and acrylic works, bringing the Southern California beaches to Santa Monica Airport. Boasting a solo presentation of new work by Hall, the Los Angeles-based gallery sold out their booth within the first few hours of the fair.
With works sold to major international institutions and collectors, Hall's success precedes his first solo museum exhibition at the SCAD Art Museum in Savannah, opening on 28 February 2023.
At Goodman Gallery's booth, it was a homage to the revered William Kentridge. In heavy presence was a series of his 2021 large-scale bronze sculptures, and Pour (2023), the newest addition to Kentridge's collection of bronzes.
Other fair highlights included Sarah Lucas, Jordan Wolfson, and Georgia Gardner Gray at Sadie Coles HQ, Henry Taylor at Hauser & Wirth, Sanam Khatibi at Mendes Wood DM, and Tony Swain at The Modern Institute.
Barbara Kruger and Anne Imhof stood out at Sprüth Magers, while a striking portrait by Wolfgang Tillmans took centre stage at Maureen Paley.
