Press Release

Maekawa was a prominent member of the Gutai Art Association. He creates works by freely manipulating pieces of burlap and sewed the material into complex waveforms. By pouring enamel paint over the surface, an abstract image is created which transcends the flatness of traditional paintings. In the mid 70s Maekawa developed a lighter, more refined style in which he tried to bring out the distinctive features of the fabric without applying too much paint. In this exhibition we are going to show works from late 70s, which represent this shift from vigorous colour-based work to delicate fabric-based expressions

About the Gallery

Boris Vervoordt created the Axel Vervoordt Gallery in 2011. The gallery opened in a historic space in the centre of Antwerp with an exhibition by Günther Uecker. Boris chose to open the gallery in the same exact place where his father had mounted exhibitions for Uecker and Jef Verheyen in the 1970s. The first exhibition—and those that followed—linked this new start to the company’s long history with art and its original home in the Vlaeykensgang. This continued a path of more than 40 years of working closely with artists.
