In November 1907, Amedeo Modigliani and the doctor Paul Alexandre met for the first time in Paris, marking the beginning of a close friendship. For seven years, the young doctor was not only Modigliani’s close confidant and advisor, but also his only financial supporter, acquiring numerous drawings and important paintings during this time. It was only after Alexandre’s death in 1968 that this remarkable collection was rediscovered.

“He was the kind of increasingly rare collector in love with art in the deepest sense of the word, the joy and despair of researchers: joy because he kept intact works of indisputable authenticity, dating from the period of Modigliani’s beginnings; despair because he jealously protected the works and no one could claim to have seen the entire collection.”

We are delighted to be the first gallery in Germany to present a Modigliani exhibition and to offer drawings from this important collection for sale. The works were only made accessible to the public by Paul Alexandre’s children in 1993 and have since only been shown in selected museums worldwide.

Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian painter and sculptor whose elongated forms—particularly memorable in his portraits—have become some of the most recognisable images in 20th-century art. Though largely unappreciated during his lifetime, Modigliani’s art has become some of the most beloved of the 20th-century European modernists.
