Press Release

Cadogan are delighted to announce a new exhibition of works by Richard Hearns. This exhibition speaks to the artist’s interest in exploration and travel. Following on from Enclave in 2021, Nomad imagines venturing out into the world in a departure from his last series which took comfort in the structure and support of the home. The exhibition opens on the 17th of November, accompanied by a catalogue with an introductory essay by critic Raphy Sarkissian.

While the means of travel and communication may have changed over the course of history, the people of the world and their desire to interact, to exchange, to trade goods, and to share stories has remained the same. Richard Hearns’ works reference our participation in and links to this history while also connecting to his own personal history. His dual heritage as Irish-Lebanese has always greatly influenced his artworks. Articulated in his abstract paintings, his experiences and connections with the traditions of these separate locations and cultures combine to form a triangular history. Through the medium of paint he endeavours to express his understanding of his culture and of exploration, discovery and identity.

‘Both intentional and accidental marks of the artist’s hand, both purposeful and irresolute expressions of gesture, both vigorous and reticent swathes of paint: such are the oppositive and dialectical givens that constitute the gestural vernacular of Richard Hearns.’ - Raphy Sarkissian

The thematic driving force is communicated through dynamic and energetic compositions, cascading, ascending, coalescing, weaving, teetering at the point of collapse and re surging with purpose. Instinctive gestural movements are balanced with formalist methods of composition. Like many of Hearns’ works, the canvases are sized to match the artist’s own body. The works are palpably physical, marks are an extension of his arm with energy channelled through the brush and onto the canvas. This intensity invites the viewer to participate in a celebration of memory, colour and form.

This will be Richard Hearns’ fourth exhibition with the gallery and follows from the success of his sell out show with Cadogan in 2021.

About the Artist

Richard Hearns paints in the wild landscape of The Burren Country National Park in County Clare, Ireland. Each painting is an extension of his physical surroundings–earth, sea and sky–materialising the artist’s experiences and memories of colour and natural phenomena. Born in Beirut and raised in Ireland, Hearns is deeply aware of the unique cultural backgrounds of both aspects of his heritage. Articulated in his abstract paintings, his experiences and connections with the traditions of these separate locations and cultures combine to form a triangular history. He endeavours to express his understandings of exploration, discovery and identity through the medium of paint.
